Every AC tune up runs this list

This is the checklist a technician works through on the visit. Every one of these has caused somebody a breakdown in July.

Refrigerant pressure check
Low charge means a leak somewhere. Topping it off without finding the leak just buys a few weeks.
Capacitor and contactor test
The single most common summer failure, and one of the cheapest parts in the system to replace before it goes.
Airflow and blower check
Weak airflow is what freezes coils. We measure it rather than guess at it.
Condensate drain clear
A blocked drain is cheap today and drywall damage in August. Especially in finished basements.
Coil condition and clean
A dirty condenser coil makes the system work harder for less cooling, every hour it runs.
Thermostat calibration
If the thermostat reads three degrees off, everything downstream of it is wrong too.
Electrical connections tightened
Loose connections cause intermittent faults that are miserable to diagnose once it's 96 degrees.
