What causes it, and what it feels like
With a furnace, the usual cause is a cracked heat exchanger. As a furnace ages, the metal that separates combustion gases from the air blown into your house develops stress cracks. Exhaust that should go up the flue gets pushed into your living space instead.
It's invisible and it has no smell, which is why detectors matter more than instinct. Every furnace we service gets checked for it, on a repair call or a tune up, whether or not you asked.

Start with what your furnace is doing
Find yours below. This won't diagnose the exact fault, but it will tell you whether to call tonight or leave it until morning.
Below freezing with no heat risks burst pipes on top of the discomfort. Shut water off to outside spigots if you can reach them, then call.
A faint dusty burn on the first run of the season is normal. A sharp electrical smell or anything like rotten eggs is not. Rotten eggs means gas: get out and call the gas company first.
Often the igniter or flame sensor, sometimes a thermostat set to fan rather than auto. Usually an inexpensive fix, but it won't resolve on its own.
Kicking on and off every few minutes. Commonly a dirty filter, a bad flame sensor or an oversized system. Left alone it wears the furnace out early.
Delayed ignition. Gas is pooling before it lights. Not usually an emergency, but it does damage over time.
Usually a duct problem, a closed damper or a room the ductwork never properly reached. Additions and finished basements do this constantly at the Lake.
