None of this replaces a technician, but it prevents a bad night from turning into a worse one.
If it's making a noise it shouldn't, smells wrong, or keeps tripping the breaker, turn it off at the thermostat and leave the breaker off. Running a failing compressor or a cracked heat exchanger makes the repair bigger and, in the second case, dangerous.
With no heat, shut doors to rooms nobody is in and gather everyone into one space. It's far easier to hold temperature in a small area, especially in a lake house with high ceilings.
Below freezing with no heat, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let a faucet drip.
A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job. Resetting it over and over puts the whole circuit through the fault again each time.
